Pregnancy and Abdominoplasty

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most important experiences of a woman's life. However, many women feel that no matter how much they love their new role as mother, they would like to return to their pre-pregnancy bodies. Abdominoplasty, or "tummy tuck," after pregnancy can help boost a woman's self esteem and get her as close to that "pre-pregnancy body" as possible. While it's not possible to erase the effects of pregnancy on a woman's body, a tummy tuck can help correct several post-pregnancy problems including sagging skin, stubborn fat deposits, and damaged abdominal muscles. Many women find that after pregnancy, skin loses some of its elasticity. This loss of elasticity often results in sagging skin that can't quite be eliminated, even after a woman has lost all of her pregnancy weight. Pregnant women naturally develop fat deposits that are sometimes difficult to remove, even with diet and exercise. Pregnancy can also cause changes in the abdominal muscles, which pregnancy stretches and damages, causing bulging and weakness in the muscle wall. For all of these reasons, many Chicago area women find that getting into post-pregnancy shape may include a tummy tuck.

One thing potential post-pregnancy tummy tuck patients should consider is whether or not they want more children. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck can often undo some of the success of the original surgery. If a woman plans to have more than one child, it might be prudent to consider postponing the procedure. However, women who plan to have multiple pregnancies are not excluded from candidacy for tummy tuck on that fact alone. Women can choose to have additional procedures to correct any problems caused by an additional pregnancy.

Otherwise, women should simply meet the standard requirements for tummy tuck candidacy. Those requirements include overall good health, lack of underlying medical conditions that might complicate the surgery, and realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure. No cosmetic surgery procedure can create a "perfect" body, but it can go a long way to correct post-pregnancy problems. Good candidates for tummy tuck should also have finished losing any pregnancy related weight gain, or be generally happy with their current weight.
