Full vs. Mini-Tummy Tuck

Chicago, Illinois

Tummy tuck procedures, also called abdominoplasty, are an excellent way for healthy patients to eliminate loose or sagging abdominal skin and tighten their abdominal muscles. Because no two bodies are exactly the same, there are different tummy tuck procedures available to create a flatter, more toned midsection. Two such options are a full tummy tuck or a mini-tummy tuck.

Depending on the patient's abdominal shape, skin elasticity and medical history, Dr. Otto Placik at Associated Plastic Surgeons, P.C. will determine whether a full or mini-tummy tuck procedure will achieve your desired results.

Mini-Tummy Tuck

The mini-tummy tuck, also referred to as a modified or partial tummy tuck, is generally performed on patients who require skin and fat removal below the belly button. This procedure requires a shorter abdominal incision than with a full tummy tuck, and the belly button does not need to be repositioned. Candidates for this type of procedure are typically close to their ideal body weight and still have relatively tight abdominal muscles, although the muscles can also be tightened during the procedure if necessary.

Advantages of the Mini-Tummy Tuck

  • The abdominal scar is shorter
  • There is no incision around the navel
  • The recovery time is shorter
  • The procedure is less invasive
  • The cost can be lower

Full Tummy Tuck

Healthy patients who continue to be plagued with excess abdominal fat and sagging skin despite maintaining a diet and exercise regimen may be candidates for a full tummy tuck. There are certain life situations that can make this type of procedure very beneficial, including:

  • Pregnancy, which can create a protruding abdomen, weak stomach muscles and sagging skin
  • Excessive weight loss, which leads to loose, sagging skin and weak abdominal muscles
  • Aging, which can result in skin and abdominal muscle laxity

This procedure typically involves a hip-to-hip incision across the abdomen, just above the bikini line. A secondary incision at the navel area may also be necessary. The incision area(s) allows Dr. Placik to remove excess skin and fat, tighten the abdominal muscles and reposition the navel back to its proper position on the abdomen.

Regardless of which type of tummy tuck procedure is performed, most patients are happy with their results and have a newfound self-confidence with their improved appearance.
