Excess Skin Removal
With age, skin naturally loses some of its elasticity. This process is often complicated by pregnancy or weight gain, resulting in sagging, or loose skin. Sagging skin can be a real health problem for some patients, because fungus can develop in skin folds. This is particularly a problem for patients who have dramatic weight loss after bariatric surgery. During a tummy tuck, this excess skin is removed and the remaining skin redraped.
Tighter abdominal muscles
Age, pregnancy, and obesity also sometimes create loose abdominal muscles. This happens when the rectus abdominus muscles on each side of the abdomen becomes stretched out. These muscles cannot regain their previous tautness on their own, even with exercise. In order to regain their original tautness, these muscles must be surgically restored. During a tummy tuck, the muscle is folded over and sutured into place. Not all tummy tuck patients needs muscle repair, however, for those who do the result is a flatter stomach and a slimmer waistline.
